There’s nothing quite like lazy evenings spent eating and drinking with your loved ones under a warm September sky, losing track of time and dashing inside to bring out the candles and keep the conversation flowing under the stars.

Summer may be drawing to a close, but September’s balmy temperatures are perfect for making the most of the end of this glorious season with some al fresco dining. And, whatever the time of year, bennettandbates‘ beautiful ethical tablewares provide the perfect backdrop for any special gathering.

We interviewed the founders of bennettandbates last year, and found out how two design experts ended up starting their own sustainable, fairly traded homewares company.

Sick of the idea that ethics are synonymous with “hippy” designs and lower quality fabrics, Laura and Lara set out to create a line of homewares that stood alone on their own merits, without compromising their ethical standards. “We want someone to buy [our products] because they love the product,” Lara told us. It’s certainly easy to fall in love with the design of their table linens first and foremost, and finding out more about the team’s ethics will only make you fall more in love with the brand.

Their entire range of products, from table runners and placemats to cushion covers and napkins are made using 100% organic cotton and printed with non toxic, azo-free inks. The pair source all of the fabrics themselves directly from suppliers in India, a rare practice in an industry where middle-men abound and most brands can’t tell you which factories made their products, let alone whether or not working conditions are fair.

We can’t get enough of their delicate prints and versatile designs. Let’s make summer last a little longer, shall we?
