Face Moisturiser by Neal’s Yard

Yarrow and Comfrey Moisturiser – £21.50

Several members of our team swear this cream has magical properties. It’s a lovely, light, soothing moisturiser, great for balancing oily skin and healing dry or red skin – in other words, it’s perfect for stressed out combination skin. Comfrey is super healing, and regenerates skin for a fresh complexion. It may be expensive, but a little does go a long way with this cream, and we’ve yet to find another moisturiser we love as much as this one.

Neal’s Yard was the world’s first health and beauty brand to be awarded a score of 100/100 for ethics by The Good Shopping Guide, and their products contain natural and Soil Association certified ingredients.

The company is based in the UK; ingredients are ethically sourced from around the world, and the packaging and products are made predominantly in the UK. They also have some USA-based stores, and an online shop for US customers. This product, however, does not seem to be currently available in the USA.

Environmentally-Friendly-(large)Being certified as organic by the Soil Association means that Neal’s Yard is helping to cut the use of pesticides in farming worldwide, maintaining healthy soil and locking in more carbon to the earth, which supports climate change adaptation by enriching soil and increasing food security, especially in times of flooding and drought. Organic farming also avoids the use of artificial nitrogen-rich fertilisers, which are potent sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Organic farming techniques also support biodiversity, as well as being better for the health of locals and especially the farmers themselves.

As well as supporting sustainable farming practices around the world, Neal’s Yard Remedies generate some of their own renewable energy in the UK, and were the first high street retailer to be certified as officially Carbon Neutral. Their purpose-built eco factory in Dorset (UK) is designed to minimise their use of resources during production.

One of Neal Yard Remedies’ greatest strengths in terms of sustainability, however, is their innovative approach to packaging: they use beautiful, simple blue packaging for all of their products that not only reduces the need for them to use artificial preservatives in their products, but also means that they can reduce manufacturing emissions by minimising the production of new packaging styles. Their blue plastic bottles are made from 100% post consumer recycled materials, meaning that they are more energy-efficient to produce while also reducing landfill. All of their glass bottles and plastic bottle tops are easily recyclable, and they also offer British customers the chance to bring in old bottles to Neal’s Yard shops and get a 10p per container returned discount on their next purchase. They have been certified by FSC and the World Land Trust for their sustainable packaging.

Cruelty Free

Cruelty free-(large)All Neal’s Yard skincare products are certified by Cruelty-Free International, an organisation that guarantees products have not been tested on animals. They also meet the Humane Cosmetics Standard for cosmetics, toiletries, and personal care products. Their commitment to animal welfare has also been recognised by PETA, and their products are 100% vegetarian certified by the Vegetarian Society. Most of their products are also vegan, although a few also contain sustainably-sourced organic honey, beeswax and propolis.

Fairly Traded

Fairly traded-(large)Soil Association certification not only protects the environment, it also ensures higher wages as well as a healthier, safer work environment for farmers because there’s a premium for organic ingredients. Neal’s Yard products also use some Fairtrade and FairWild certified ingredients, which ensures that farmers in developing countries are paid a living wage and work in safe conditions. FairWild also supports the production of sustainable wild-harvested ingredients.
