Matt & Nat are a Canadian vegan brand that is constantly seeking out innovative ways to create beautiful and eco-friendly leather-free accessories. Their range is available in boutiques around the world, as well as internationally through their online shop.

Cruelty Free

Cruelty free-(large)Matt & Nat was founded on vegan and eco-conscious values in 1995, and you can be sure that they never use leather or animal products in their range. Their head office in Montreal, Canada, is a ‘cruelty free zone’ and sounds like a bit of a vegetarian/vegan paradise; on the last Friday of every month the staff hold a vegetarian potluck, and employees’ birthdays are celebrated with vegan cupcakes.

Various vegan leathers are used throughout the range, and wherever possible PU is used over PVC, as it is less harmful for the environment.

Environmentally-Friendly-(large)Matt & Nat have been experimenting with different sustainable materials over the years, such as recycled nylons, cardboard, rubber, and cork. Since 2007 they’ve been committed to lining their bags with 100% recycled bottle plastic; approximately 21 bottles are recycled for every Matt & Nat bag. They’ve also recently started using recycled bicycle tires.

Finally, Matt & Nat design and test their bags for durability, so that their bags can outlast changing fashions and become treasured heritage pieces that get handed down rather than discarded.

Fairly Traded

Fairly traded-(large)Matt & Nat bags are produced in China, in small factories that they have built long-standing relationships with. They are diligent about regularly visiting all of their factories to check that operations are in line with their ethical standards, and build strong personal relationships with the owners. They only collaborate with factories that share their ethos and brand values; one of the factories they work with is certified SA8000 standard, and they hope to expand this certification to the other factories they work with in the near future.
